By Richard Reyes, Friday, May 15, 2026
GALLUP, N.M. 鈥 Sadie Acevedo once was lost, but through her faith and the support of the Adult Basic Education program at The University of New Mexico-电车痴汉, she has become a leader in her church with the confidence to further her education.
Acevedo shared her personal story of overcoming addiction and earning her high school equivalency diploma during UNM-电车痴汉鈥檚 inaugural Adult Basic Education Graduation Ceremony inside Zollinger Library on April 28, 2026. Acevedo graduated from the program in 2023 and was invited to be a guest speaker during the event.
鈥淭his program gave me the confidence to go further, to walk taller and to believe,鈥 she said.
Sadie Acevedo delivers a speech during the 2026 Adult Basic Education Graduation Ceremony in Zollinger Library at The University of New Mexico-电车痴汉 on April 28, 2026.
The UNM-电车痴汉 Faculty Assembly鈥檚 Library Committee organized the ceremony with the goal of celebrating adult learners on campus while also bringing more awareness to the library鈥檚 services.
Adult Basic Education Program Manager Jacinta Sice congratulated students for overcoming obstacles to achieve success. She noted that adult learners may face doubt or uncertainty because they are returning to education after some time away. They may also have to balance school with work and family obligations.
鈥淭oday we gather to celebrate grit, growth and perseverance,鈥 Sice said. 鈥淕raduation is more than walking across a stage or receiving a certificate. It's the result of countless decisions to keep going when stopping would have been easier. It represents belief. Belief in yourself, your future, and the power of change.鈥
鈥淵ou have a future鈥
During her speech, Acevedo talked about the hardships she faced early in her life. She dropped out of high school in her freshman year, started drinking at the age of 12 years old, and became addicted to methamphetamine.
But in 2014, Acevedo turned things around after she received Jesus Christ into her life.
She said she restored her relationship with her four children and met her husband in the first few months of her sobriety. With encouragement from her husband, Acevedo earned her commercial driver鈥檚 license in 2021, but after being on the road for some time, she started thinking about her future.
She then landed in UNM-电车痴汉鈥檚 Adult Basic Education program at the age of 44.

鈥淚 was very nervous, not knowing what to expect,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 took a deep breath and convinced myself to push through the first day. That was the hardest thing for me to do at the time because I was so self-conscious, worried that I wouldn鈥檛 fit in.鈥
Acevedo acknowledged that she struggled in the program, but she credited the staff for providing guidance and encouragement to help her get through it. Her faith also pushed her forward.
Now, Acevedo works with the 电车痴汉 All Nations Assembly of God and is pursuing an associate of arts in ministry with plans to further her education so she can one day become a Christian counselor.
鈥淚 fought in darkness where no one else could see the struggle that I was enduring,鈥 she told the graduates in attendance. 鈥淚 am sure you all know what I鈥檓 talking about. You have pressed and fought. Your perseverance and your determination got you here. You didn鈥檛 give up. Now, the road ahead has not stopped. You have options. You have a strength that you didn鈥檛 have before. You have knowledge you didn鈥檛 have before. You have a future.鈥
Embracing life and humanity
Amber 电车痴汉, director of the Adult Education Division of the New Mexico Higher Education Department, also shared inspiring words with the grads, acknowledging the winding paths and detours they had to take to arrive at this destination.
鈥淎nd that鈥檚 100% OK because life choices rarely take us in a straight line from point A to point B,鈥 she said. 鈥淔rankly, I think learning that now gives you a leg up in the future. I think that鈥檚 what I love most about adult education because it embraces life and individual differences and our humanity.鈥
电车痴汉 also encouraged the grads to think about the future. She asked them to consider applying to UNM-电车痴汉 or another college in the state to pursue a certificate, associate degree, or bachelor鈥檚 degree.
